Banksy’s Police Kids was released as a limited edition print in 2005. The edition of 350 contains 150 signed prints and 200 unsigned prints. Banksy also produced a very small run of 22 Artist Proofs in pink that same year.
“A lot of parents will do anything for their children except let them be themselves” – Banksy , Wall and Piece.
The Police Kids artwork depicts a boy and a girl, both of grammar-school age, skipping blithely into the foreground in what appears to be water. Both children are dressed neatly; they link arms chummily as they skip and she carries a wicker basket with flowers in her other hand. The children are a pastiche of innocence – except that they wear bulletproof vests with the word “POLICE’ emblazoned across each of their chests. The vests starkly contrast the supposed freedom of childhood with the concerns of many parents and with a militaristic society that feels the need to overbear protection and overstate the presumption of evil.
